Transitioning into Senior Living

Transitioning into Senior Living, St. Louis

Thinking about downsizing? Is that big house feeling a little too big for the two of you? Is it finally time to make the big move into a Senior Living Community? After finally making the decision to give up the house and move into Senior Living, the transition itself and seem a little intimidating. After all, it is a huge adjustment after living on your own for so long. Although we can’t completely alleviate all stress and anxiety, Senior Living, is here to make the transition as smooth and hassle-free as possible.

The Preparation:

When choosing a senior living facility it is important to not only know your budget but to understand the pay structure of the community you’re moving into. Some are all-inclusive offering one monthly fee for everything, while others offer a tier-based program depending on what level of care you want or need.

Once you have decided on which facility you think best suits your needs we would suggest taking a tour of that facility. It’s a good idea to go take a look at the place before moving in. Meet the staff and residents, ask questions. Maybe even participate in one of the activities offered so you can truly get a sense of the place. Since this is going to be your new home you want to make sure that it’s a good fit for you and that you’re going to be comfortable there.

Settling In:

That first week after moving can be quite busy, and it’s important that you make the most of it. Get to know your neighbours. These are the new people that you’re going to be spending a significant amount of time with. Most of these people are in a similar situation as yourself so we encourage you to introduce yourself and make some new friends.

We also encourage you to get to know and build relationships with the staff and caregivers at the facility. These are the ones who are going to be creating your personalized care program. They are the ones that you will call upon if you need anything, or want to try a new activity.  Our staff is there to serve you and we want to make sure it’s pleasant and enjoyable for everyone.

We can’t stress enough the importance of getting involved in the various activities offered by your new Senior Living Community. This is a fun, and excellent way to get to know your new community and to make some new friends. Who knows, you might even discover a new activity that you enjoy.

A lot of people think that moving into an assisted living community means the end to life as they knew it. Another vital component to feeling young and full of life is moving your body. Our facilities offer a wide range of exercise programs and we encourage you to sign up.

At the end of the day, no matter how prepared you are, the emotions behind this type of transition can still be overwhelming. At Senior Living, we assign each of our clients a personal liaison to be there to answer any questions, be a listening ear, hold your hand, or just a shoulder to cry on if needed. We want to make this transition as smooth, easy, and stress-free as possible.
